Bifacial Solar Panels for UK Commercial
Bifacial panels generate from both sides — capturing reflected light from beneath. On the right surfaces (white roofs, ground-mount over reflective ground), bifacial gain adds 5–15% to system output for a small price premium.

Bifacial solar panels have transparent backsheets (or glass-glass construction) and active solar cells on both sides. The rear cells generate from albedo — reflected light from the surface beneath. On reflective surfaces, this adds 5–15% to total output. On dark surfaces, the gain is minimal. Knowing where bifacial pays off is the key.
How Bifacial Solar Works
- Front side: standard direct-light solar generation.
- Rear side: cells active on diffuse and reflected light from the ground or roof beneath.
- Bifaciality factor: ratio of rear-side to front-side output. Tier-1 bifacial panels achieve 70–85% bifaciality.
- Real-world gain: front + (rear × bifaciality factor × albedo). Typical 5–15% additional output.
Where Bifacial Wins
- White TPO commercial roofs: high albedo (0.6–0.8). Best rooftop bifacial gain — 8–12% extra output.
- Ground-mount over reflective ground: white gravel, white sand, snow-prone areas. 10–15% gain.
- Solar carports with white-painted decks: visible aesthetic plus 7–10% extra output.
- Vertical-mounted (east-west bifacial): niche — fences, walls. Both sides face direct light.
Where Bifacial Loses
- Dark roofs (asphalt, dark felt, black single-ply): albedo 0.05–0.15. Bifacial gain ~2–4%, often not worth the price premium.
- Standard pitched residential-style roofs: rear of panel close to roof surface, minimal reflection. Bifacial gain ~3–5%.
- Heavily-shaded sites: bifacial doesn't help with shading.

Most major tier-1 commercial brands now offer bifacial variants of their flagship modules.
Cost Premium
- Bifacial panels typically cost 3–7% more than equivalent monofacial.
- System cost premium is smaller than panel cost premium because mounting, inverter, BoS unchanged.
- Total system cost premium typically 1–3%.
When Bifacial Pays Back
- White TPO commercial roof with 10% bifacial gain: pays back in ~6 months from extra generation.
- Ground-mount over white gravel with 13% gain: pays back in ~4 months.
- Dark roof with 3% gain: pays back in ~12–18 months — often not worth it.
Specification Considerations
- Mounting must allow rear-side ventilation — open back or lift mounted at sufficient height.
- Albedo of substrate dictates gain; specify white or reflective ground covers.
- Inverter sizing should account for bifacial gain to avoid clipping at peak.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much extra output do bifacial panels generate?
5–15% extra output depending on surface albedo. White TPO roofs: 8–12%. Ground-mount over reflective ground: 10–15%. Dark roofs: 2–4%.
Are bifacial panels worth the extra cost?
On reflective surfaces, yes — typical payback of 4–12 months on the price premium. On dark roofs, the gain is too small to justify the cost.
Which surface gives the best bifacial gain?
Highest albedo wins. White TPO commercial roofs (0.6–0.8 albedo), white sand or gravel ground, snow-covered ground are best. Standard dark roofing gives minimal benefit.
Can bifacial panels work on standard pitched roofs?
Marginally. Pitched-roof installations have the rear of the panel close to the roof surface, minimising reflection capture. Bifacial gain is typically 3–5% — often not worth the premium.
Do bifacial panels need different mounting?
Yes — mounting must allow rear-side ventilation and sufficient gap between panel and substrate for light reflection. Standard rail mounting at sufficient height works for most pitched/flat installs.
